How to Set Up a VPN Connection on Your Keenetic Router

Follow these steps to configure an OpenVPN connection on your Keenetic router.

Step 1: Access the Router’s Web Interface

  1. Open your browser and go to 192.168.1.1 or my.keenetic.net.
  2. Enter your router’s login and password. (These are typically written on a sticker on the bottom of the device.)

Step 2: Install the OpenVPN Client and Server Component

  1. Navigate to General System Settings and click on Component Options.
  2. Find and install the OpenVPN Client and Server component.
  • Note: Your internet connection may be temporarily lost during installation.

Step 3: Download the OpenVPN Configuration File

  1. Go to the ZoogVPN Configuration Files page.
  2. Download the required OpenVPN configuration file for your VPN server.

Step 4: Modify the Configuration File

  1. Open the downloaded OVPN file using a text editor.
  2. Remove the line: auth-user-pass
  3. Replace it with the following section, adding your ZoogVPN login and password:

<auth-user-pass>

[email protected] (your ZoogVPN login)

enter your password here (your ZoogVPN password)

</auth-user-pass>

Step 5: Add a VPN Connection in Your Router

  1. Access the router’s web interface again at 192.168.1.1 or my.keenetic.net.
  2. Go to Other Connections > VPN Connections and click Add Connection.
  3. In the VPN Connection Settings window:
    • Select OpenVPN under the Type (protocol) field.

Step 6: Import the Configuration File

  1. Open the modified OVPN configuration file.
  2. Select all text (Ctrl+A) and copy it (Ctrl+C).

In the router’s VPN Connection Settings, paste the copied text into the OpenVPN xonfiguration field (Ctrl+V).

Note: If you’re using test configuration files and notice that traffic is being sent but nothing is received, make sure to go into Show advanced settings and enable the “Receive routes from the remote side” option. This is sometimes required for test configs, even if older ones worked without it.

Step 7: Customize the Connection (Optional)

  1. You can rename the connection to something more descriptive, such as the region (e.g., “US VPN”).
  2. To customize the schedule or interface definition, click Show advanced settings.
  3. Save the connection when done.

Step 8: Set Connection Priority

  1. Go to Connection Policies in the router settings.
  2. Move your VPN connection above the ISP connection to prioritize VPN traffic.
  3. Save the changes.

Step 9: Create and Apply a Connection Policy

  1. In Connection Policies, click + Add Policy
    • Give it a name and click OK.
    • Include only your VPN connection in this policy and save.
  2. Go to Apply Policies and assign your devices (Home Network) to the newly created access policy.
    • Ensure the policy includes Home Network unless configured otherwise.

Step 10: Manage the VPN Connection

  1. To enable or disable the VPN connection, go to Other Connections > VPN Connections.
  2. Use the toggle switch to turn the connection on or off.

Alternative: Using L2TP/PPTP

While Keenetic routers support L2TP and PPTP VPN connections, these protocols may face connectivity issues with many VPN services due to ISP restrictions, network bans, and evolving security policies.

How to Set Up an L2TP/PPTP VPN Connection

  1. Open the router’s web interface (192.168.1.1 or my.keenetic.net).
  2. Go to Other Connections > VPN Connections and click Add Connection.
  3. Select L2TP or PPTP under the Type (protocol) field.
  4. Enter the following details:
    • Server Address: Enter the VPN server address provided by ZoogVPN.
    • Login: Enter your ZoogVPN account email.
    • Password: Enter your ZoogVPN account password.
  5. Save the settings and try connecting.

Note: Most ISPs block PPTP and L2TP VPN connections, making them unreliable. It is recommended to use OpenVPN instead.

Troubleshooting

  • Verify that the connection is working properly by testing the VPN connection.
